According to the Hollywood Reporter (THR), WWE is close to closing a deal for Smackdown TV right with FOX. The deal is reportedly worth $1 Billion. Yes, Billion.
The report breaks down that FOX would be paying $205 Million a year starting in October 2019 for 5 years. Smackdown would move back to Friday Nights.
If this report is true, WWE would be seeing a significant increase in their TV earnings between both shows. RAW is staying on the NBCU owned USA Network and will be getting 3x the TV rights revenue (which will bring them around the same amount of money as Smackdown).
THR is also reporting that there is another party interested in paying MORE money for Smackdown but the WWE has gotten a strong promise for promotion across all of Fox’s other sports properties, including the NFL and MLB programs.
With NBCU potentially giving up their exclusivity of airing WWE”s cable programs, this opens up the potential for WWE to create more programs for other networks.
For example, what’s to keep the WWE from creating their own sitcom that could star WWE Superstars with Hollywood stars for the Fox Broadcast Network? What if WWE gets an offer from CBS/Showtime to do a few annual “super-cards” on the Showtime?
WWE’s revenue model is going to be revolutionized.
