WarnerMedia is doubling down on its HBO MAX film productions.
According to the New York Post, HBO MAX is going to be releasing 10 films exclusively on HBO MAX in 2022. WarnerMedia will no longer be offering theatrical releases on HBO MAX simultaneously.
In 2021, all Warner Bros. Studio’s films were also available on HBO MAX on the same day as its theatrical release.
“The motion-picture format absolutely matters and it matters in a number of ways,” WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar said on the second-quarter earnings call of WarnerMedia parent AT&T. “It matters in theaters … They also matter at home … We feel very good about the response that consumers have given it in the home.”
Disney has found a model that seems to work well for them. Disney+ offers films on the app at the same time as a theatrical release. However, Disney does charge an extra fee for access to the films.
Marvel’s Black Widow saw $80 Million in theatrical sales and $60 million in Disney+ sales. It will be interesting to see if Disney and NBCUniversal’s Peacock also follows suit.
