I’m a big fan of rom-coms and the unrealistic predictablilty that comes with the genre but while Letters to Juliet had to potential to be another good chick flick, the finished product fails to deliver.
So here’s the plot. Wanna be journalist Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) goes on her pre-wedding honeymoon with her fiancée and aspiring chef, Gael García Bernal. While goes about dying over food and wine she becomes a ‘secretary’ of Juliet, one of a group of women who answer letters of the confused women, pinned to what is believed to be Juliet Capulet’s home in Verona. She then meets Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) and her grandson Charlie (Home And Away’s Christopher Egan) and we begin a crazy romantic search for Claire’s childhood love.
Like I said, a lot of potential to be a typical cheesy but cute rom- com however, it just doesn’t work. It is easy to see why Sophie is not completely happy with her fiancé, I couldn’t even be bothered to count how many time he said ‘Amazing’ or ‘Incredible’. The trailer basically tells you that she is going to fall for Charlie but the chemistry between Seyfried and Egan just didn’t work for me. But that could have been because of his ridiculous attempt at a British accent.
The film starts to go downhill once the search begins and we are forced to watch Seyfried do her normal big eyed routine. It just got boring and the ending was too cheesy.
Redgrave was the only person that saved this movie and even then she couldn’t do enough.
