Pharrell Williams is taking legal action against Will.I.Am in the latest chapter of the trademark war between the two artists. Will.I.Am recently filed a copyright claim against Pharrell’s creative brand “i am OTHER,” claiming he owns the rights to the phrase “I AM.”
According to legal documents obtained by TMZ.com, Pharrell has now filed a suit against Will in an effort to block Will from stopping his use of the “i am OTHER” brand.
Pharrell claims the two are using the phrase in different ways. While he says Will is using “I AM” as a play on his own name, Pharrell claims his brand name means “I am something else.” He adds that consumers are free to imagine what that “else” means to them.
Pharrell is asking a judge to grant him written permission to continue using the “I Am Other” trademark.
