Sandman: Overture #6
Stray Bullets: Sunshine and Roses #8
There are a few reader responses in the Kaijumax letter column to a scene of prison brutality that I’d rather not touch upon too much for spoiler reasons, and Zander Cannon showed some remorse for putting the unsuspecting reader through such a trauma, but he showed no regret. He touched upon a truth about the series: that it started quite cartoonish and, issue by issue, became deadly serious. It tried to pull people in as a high-concept joke about movie monsters in prison, but the hope was that by the time you made it to that scene you knew just what kind of book you were reading.
I was shocked by it, but he was right. It was a natural progression. Prison is an unspeakably harsh environment, and truly appalling things happen behind those walls. This island is no different. And these are true monsters.
