-MAN. I’M JUST SO SICK OF THESE CIVIL WARS TWO.

We have once again run into that classic Marvel problem, the crossover mega-event that doesn’t hit its deadlines and is still going while the rest of the books move on with the aftermath. It doesn’t help that it’s been a sluggish snooze that could have crammed the eight issues of story (nine if you count the Free Comic Book Day prologue) into a tight four or five. Instead we have:

1. The one where things go down

2. The one where we talk about what went down

3. The one where WHOA SOMETHING CRAZY HAPPENS!~

4. The one where everyone is mad about that thing

5. The one where punching

6. The one where we sigh uncontrollably about all the punching

7. The one that ends with the climax of the story

8. The one where we give all the characters a page to spin off into their own books

I’m spitballing on those last two, but I’ll buy a hat and eat it if it’s not at least somewhat close.

Just imagine if they had condensed every two issues into a single powerful hit. If every odd issue didn’t end with a gotcha cliffhanger moment, but they just happened organically mid-book wherever it makes sense. Even if it cost an extra dollar and was 5-10 pages longer per book, and you didn’t have to sacrifice as much story but you can still get the thing wrapped up by the end of summer. Maybe if event books didn’t spin into post-event stories that slide into the ramp-up for the next event.

I know at the end of the day it was a tie-in to a completely unrelated movie, but if it wasn’t Civil War II it would’ve been something else. I like these events as often as not, but the fatigue of never having any down time makes it a struggle each and every time.
