-HEART

I had the privilege of getting my hands on an advance copy of Image Comics’ upcoming MMA comic Heart at New York Comic Con.  I’ve been a huge fan of long-time comics critic, first-time comics writer Blair Butler, and have been excited for this book since its announcement, hoping that she would succeed at making the jump from tastemaker to actual chef.  She did not disappoint me.  I found it to be a natural and purposeful comic that did an exceptional job of transitioning the frenetic sport of mixed martial arts to a medium without motion (credit given, of course, to artist Kevin Mellon).  It’s a real sports comic in an industry where such a thing is practically non-existant.  Pick it up when you see it on the shelves in November.  It’s a type of book I’ve wanted to read for a long time;  maybe you’ll want to read it too.
