-HEY LLOYD, I’M READY TO BE HEARTBROKEN
The second volume of Phonogram, The Singles Club, is among my personal favorite comics of all time. Each issue is a standalone story from the same night, each from a different character’s perspective. Lloyd’s is both the worst and the best at the same time somehow; it’s less entertaining, but it exudes the maniacal, obsessive energy of its protagonist. Every thought turned over and reshaped until it’s a perfect, precious thing…but all that effort goes nowhere, because he’s all thought and no action.
The Immaterial Girl had, to this point, been a singular story about a whole different character. It’s been good, but couldn’t hold a candle to The Singles Club. And then out of nowhere here comes another chapter in the story of Lloyd and Laura, directly picking up from where their respective threads left off. I didn’t know that was something I needed until I got it. It’s pretty much perfect, right down to it being slightly boring and obsessive.
