-Q2 IS SOME HOT GARBAGE
Christopher Priest is responsible for some of my favorite comics…for about two storylines. After that he suffers under the crushing weight of his own storyline. It’s like he has too many serious ideas to deal with and he forgets that it was fun that brought him to the dance. The first run of Quantum and Woody was starting to falter by the end of its 17 issues, but there managed to be some amount of joy to it. Soon after, Valiant Comics was bought by Acclaim and they picked up right where they left off*, and it was a weird dark nightmare that thankfully only lasted for a few issues.
Q2 is like the nightmare version of that nightmare. Priest is working so hard to establish the ties from the old series to where they picked up now that none of the characters seem to be enjoying themselves. It feels like he’s trying to make a Dark Knight Returns for his heroes, but the tone is so off and overdone that it feels more like Dark Knight Strikes Back. I don’t know if I can give a higher indication of disappointment than that.
*Before resuming with issue #18, it first jumped forward to issue #32 to give the story a place to build to. It was a similar style of mess as Q2 but on a reduced scale.
