Black Magick is an odd bird. Nicola Scott’s art is beautiful, sometimes breathtaking. The infusion of color when magic is involved is an inspired and frankly affecting touch. And the story is interesting, full of twists and energy, and I care about these people. So why don’t I care more about the book?
It could be the pacing. I feel like the story has been going on for ages but we’re only eleven issues in. Perhaps it’s not knowing the stakes. There are mentions of how bad things are, but there hasn’t been any true consequence. They say how powerful Rowan is, but we haven’t seen that power yet.
Black Magick has all the building blocks of a classic, but I’m always a little nonplussed when I set down an issue. I hope it’s a calm before a storm, and there’s a tornado of roaring story coming down from the sky any day now. It wouldn’t shock me. It feels like it may be through the introduction and ready for the story to truly start.
