–IN DEFENSE OF ASTRO CITY
To put it bluntly, I have not enjoyed this arc of Astro City. It’s reminding me of why I stopped reading it in the ‘90s, where I ran into a multi-issue story that fell flat for me (I believe it also ran into shipping delays at that time, which didn’t help matters). But one bad arc does not ruin a series. The shorter stories since the relaunch have been fantastic. I’ve found Astro City’s strength to be in its looks at lesser heroes and everyday people, and the more efficiently told the better. If this Winged Victory storyline had been centered more on the boy who came looking for help, or if Busiek could have crammed this whole thing into one or two issues, I’m fairly certain I would have really liked it.
These stretches in Astro City are the exception, not the rule. I’m ready to give the next issue a fair shot, and I’m ready to love it all over again.
