-WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN?
Marvel is barreling toward a multiverse-wide crossover called Secret Wars that more or less promises to be the end of the Ultimate Universe. As such, the comic is being cut down before its time. In fairness, this has happened no less than four times before, and if there’s not some sort of Ultimate Spider-Man #1 by the end of the year I’ll buy a hat and then eat it. But every other case has been a bouncing back from major life-changing events, but still a direct continuation of the same story. This feels like a full stop and reset.
What will become of Ganke? Of Miles’ father? Or their version of Aunt May and Gwen Stacy, who have remained in the supporting cast even after Peter Parker’s story had passed? What of Bombshell, another original character who barely got to spread her wings? Even if Miles crosses over, without the rest of them is he even the same character?
I fear that Miles Morales will go from being the one and only Spider-Man for a world that needs one, a title that he has clawed and scratched to earn for years now, to being yet another Spider-Guy bouncing around Manhattan. That would be a crying shame. He’s just started to find his way out of the shadow of being nothing more than Black Spider-Man. I just don’t want to go back to square one.
