-EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN

Quantum and Woody’s return is different for me than all of the other Valiant titles that have relaunched so far, in that this is the only one I already had a fondness for.  The old Christopher Priest comic was one of my favorite comics in the ‘90s, and one of the first comics I read that challenged my notions of what comics could do with humor.  So unshockingly, this new book falls a bit flat for me just by virtue of being different.  But the original run was by no means a perfect book — like just about everything I’ve read from Priest, it started strong and smart before getting bogged down by the weight of its cumbersome backstory getting pulled front and center — and every other Valiant relaunch seems to have streamlined what was good about each book and paired it with smart writing and good stories, so I’m still looking forward to more in a big way.  And how can I be mad when they brought back MEDICINE WOMAAAN!!  Man, for a song that doesn’t exist that sure is catchy.

Also this week, Astro City manages to feel exactly like Astro City, which is just a great, great thing.  I’d missed it, but there never seemed to be a good place to jump on after I stopped reading.
