-MY TIME WITH THE OLD GUARD
The first fifteen pages or so of The Old Guard #1 were functionally solid but didn’t grab me. It was an okay war story that jumped around enough that I wasn’t keeping everything straight right away. I actually had a moment where I said out loud, “Okay, where’s the gimmick?” because it felt like it needed an extra push to be something special.
It got there.
The last few pages cemented what kind of story The Old Guard is, and started to pull all the threads together in such a way that my second read through was crystal clear and crackling with energy. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a Sixth Sense-style twist that changes the whole story or anything. It’s just a solid premise that loads its impact into the end of the first chapter.
This could easily be a comic that I look forward to in the same way I look forward to Lazarus or Velvet; one where I look forward to the filling in of the gaps as much as I look forward to seeing what happens next.
