-SOCIAL JUSTICE HEROES

The current Ms. Marvel storyline has been a really strong treatise on why people who don’t feel evil in their hearts may still follow evil; the feeling of powerlessness that can occur from stumbling after being told you’re privileged and special and should always succeed. How easy it is to slide from that overwhelming personal shame into finding someone outside of yourself who can be blamed for your failure. The strength that comes from finding others like yourself and thinking you’re not such a misfit after all, because the odds were secretly against you all along. And of course, the inability to take a step back as you descend further toward hate and you have to either keep going or admit that you’re as powerless as you felt at the start, amplified by the shame of what you’ve already done, what you’ve let yourself become to fit this new mold. It’s hard to admit you’ve been wrong, especially in this current climate where contrition is seen as weakness, and both sides are primed to pounce on anything that can help them win because failure is not an option.

Champions tried to tackle this as well but with a much heavier, hammier hand. It rang as preaching to the choir, whereas Ms. Marvel has laid bare truths that would be undeniable if truth held any power anymore. If only being correct was as important as following what feels right these days. Maybe compromise and common ground would be attainable once again.
