-MADNESS IS DIFFICULT
Moon Knight had some moments of brilliance in these first five issues. Its loose grip on reality meant that you were flying by the seat of your pants from page to page because you didn’t know when everything was going to fall away and leave you floating in space. But therein lies the problem; if you have no anchor point, nothing you can believe to be real, then you’re just floating the whole time.
Casanova has done a pretty good job of making absolute insanity work for it. That comic went crazy all the time, and seemed to get crazier every issue. But we knew Casanova Quinn. And he knew what was going on. It helped to make the madness more palatable. Perhaps this is also why I’m having such problems with the latest Casanova series, because he has amnesia and can’t be our emotional anchor.
It’s hard to drop a book written by Jeff Lemire that often felt grand and looked beautiful, and it ended on an interesting note, but I don’t think it’s going to get any more coherent. And I could do with saving another four dollars a month.
