-THOSE TRICKY NEW AVENGERS

This series has had significant ups and downs, with long periods of slow world-building and simplistic angst in place of actual character conflict. But issue 23 was the kind of story that makes reading New Avengers worth it. Because Hickman had painted himself into a corner with a threat that would never stop getting worse and would take our heroes with it, transforming them slowly into monsters. And there seemed to be no way out. This issue presented a way out, and it was exquisite. A purely elegant solution that the story earned right under my nose.

[IMPLIED SPOILERS FOLLOW]

There was a season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer where the overarching threat, a cadre of kinda-evil nerds, felt unthreatening and unimportant. It was a diversion. The season’s Big Bad was one of Buffy’s friends, pushed beyond her limits to a dark place that no longer recognized right from wrong. That’s the way this story felt: like one of the good guys not only switched sides, but did so with such utter negligence and harshness that the universe…all universes…are in danger. A monster so dangerous that Thanos is playing second fiddle to him. It’s a wonderful twist that was wonderfully twisted.
