-IT JUST WASN’T SUPER
“Superbland” was a bit too harsh a review for Action Comics #1000. Some of it was very good, and most of it somewhat solid. But it remains true that Superman is an extremely hard character to nail down, and almost every story took its handful of pages to try to present Superman as an ideal instead of a character. It was the oatmeal of comics; it was tasty, but I’m very cognizant that I’m enjoying a warm mush.
Added to that was the buildup of Brian Michael Bends’ first foray into DC Comics. And his story was Bendis through and through, and once you get past the dissonance of seeing Superman in a Bendis comic that’s all you’ve got. Another Bendis comic. I love the man and he’s written some truly amazing stories in the past twenty years, but when he’s unfocused his comics are long-winded nightmares where nothing much happens. This may as well have been a scene from Invincible Iron Man.
Superman tends to be lame to begin with but Bendis’ part of this book might have been the low point, which is bad news when you consider he’s the man at the helm for Superman’s foreseeable future.
Maybe BENDIS IS COMING was a warning.
