Former American Idol finalist, Jessica Meuse, has released a “Slapout” record called Halfhearted, available on all streaming platforms and her website, and it’s really great!
The Slapout, Alabama native has finally released a full length album after 4 years of playing shows and writing music. Meuse had some great moments on Idol, but one moment stands out above most.
When Meuse appeared before then judges Harry Connick Jr., Keith Urban, and Jennifer Lopez, she and Connick had a laughable moment after she said that she was from “Slapout, Alabama”.
Meuse would go on to finish 4th in the 13th season of American Idol.
Now, Let’s Talk About Today
Today, Jessica Meuse is on the road playing music almost every night. She just released her first album, Halfhearted, and it is incredible.
Halfhearted really touches on her country roots while also playing into some great southern rock overtones; it’s a great collection of style and skill from Meuse and her band.
One of the things that I really admire about this album is Meuse’s ability to truly tell a story with each song. She didn’t write this ablum halfheartedly (see what I did there?). The first song on the album is called “Brown Eyed Devil” and it tells the story of a guy who’s no good for you. Listen to it, really listen to it.
The writing for this album is absolute gold. Here are the lyrics to “Brown-Eyed Devil:”
“He’s got barbed wire in his soul,
Lips like Sugar Cane.
A hand that you can hold
His kiss will take your breath away,
He’s a rose with poison thorns.”
Seriously, amazing writing.
This album has been on repeat for me; and every time I play it again, I find more gems in the writing. One of my favorite songs on the record is “Love Her Better.”
The song is an upbeat letter to an ex lover saying they hope you love your next lover better. I find myself dancing a little to this song.
The title track, “Halfhearted” is an interesting song. It starts off with her singing the hook and then into a verse of a talk-rap. I feel like this might be about Meuse’s journey in music.
“Halfhearted” tells the story of someone who chased their dreams instead of going and becoming a nurse (I’m sure it’s imagery for any job that’s “easier” than chasing your dream) and spent her time getting on TV (Idol) and racking up views.
At one point in the title track, Meuse talked about being an outcast in her journey. She connected with other people who were also outcasts. This song can connected with anyone who has chased their dreams as opposed to taking an “easier” road and got a “normal” job.
Former American Idol contestant and finalist, Bo Bice made an appearance on this record as well. On Meuse’s song “Without You,” Bice and Meuse have a really nice back and forth duet. Incredible. The two vocals compliment one another really well.
Overall, this album is phenomenal from start to finish. You will truly enjoy this record. Don’t sleep on this one! Go and purchase the album or stream it from your favorite streaming platform.
