We’ve heard it before, but this time it’s really happening. Dunkin’ Donut’s is doing away with their styrofoam cups in exchange for something a bit more earth-friendly. The styrofoam life juice holders will be replaced with new double-walled paper cups by the year 2020. The company says making that switch would “eliminate nearly 1 billion foam cups from the waste stream annually”, which is pretty incredible.
“Transitioning away from foam has been a critical goal for Dunkin’ Donuts U.S., with the double-walled cup, we will be able to offer a replacement that meets the needs and expectations of both our customers and the communities we serve.” – Karen Raskopf
Now, if you live (or visit) in New York or California, you’ll see this change a lot sooner than the rest of the country. Starting this Spring, Dunkin’ locations in those two states will be making the switch to the new cups. I don’t know about you, but here in Massachusetts, I sometimes like to ask for a “hot cup” which if you’re not familiar, is a styrofoam cup to put over my plastic cup holding an iced beverage. It helps to keep the condensation from the cold liquid and melting ice off my hands and well, off everything it touches too, I guess. I only do that once in a while, because I do feel bad using an extra cup that isn’t really necessary, just convenient. So I guess once the new cups arrive, I, along with many others won’t be able to ask for a ‘hot cup’ any longer!
