Disney CEO Bob Chapek has fired the company’s TV executive, Peter Rice, The New York Post reports.
The firing comes as a surprise to many at Disney. Rice had recently signed a new contract that kept him with Disney through 2024. During his time at Disney, he oversaw the division responsible for over 300 shows annually. Those shows would be broadcast on the company’s many platforms including ABC, Disney Channel, Disney+, and Hulu.
The New York Times is reporting that Chapek is the one who personally handled the firing of Rice.
Rice’s replacement is his former second in command, Dana Walden, who was one of the the executives that Rice brought over after Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019. During his time at 21st Century Fox, Rice was the chairman of general entertainment.
“Dana is a dynamic, collaborative leader and cultural force who in just three years has transformed our television business into a content powerhouse that consistently delivers the entertainment audiences crave,” Chapek said.
