-PROSE: THE PACE MURDERER
This Wicked + Divine special was a mix of comic pages and written word, with the story alternating between the two. A murder mystery with more than a dozen characters who, while many were analogues of characters we know well, we were just meeting for the first time. I find it hard to believe it would’ve been readable as a traditional comic. That said, when you flop between the two forms for the whole story there is a whiplash effect that makes reading the comic part feel too quick and the prose part feel like molasses.
Imagine if you were listening to A Game of Thrones on audiobook, but every twenty or thirty minutes they’d direct you to stop and watch a minute of the TV show. It’s great to get the extra flashiness of the comic sequences in WicDiv1923, but on a whole it seems we would have been better served just reading the whole thing as words on a page.
That said, the story was tremendous and I loved the journey it took me on.
