American Idol took on Disney songs and while they had a few standouts, for the most part, Disney Week failed. And here’s why: ABC is trying very hard to make sure that Disney profits from Idol.
Disney/ABC paid a lot of money to get Idol on their network. Showcasing Disneyland and Disney themed songs will help promote both the theme parks and the movies that the contestants took on. Idol has been consistently getting over 7 million viewers therefor a chance to promote some new and classic Disney movies.
Disney songs have a nostalgic tick too many of us and seeing someone perform those songs might get us in the mood to watch the movie from that song.
Here’s the problem: Many of the contestants had their worst night with the Disney theme. Outside of Maddie Poppe and Michelle Sussett, the remaining top 10 really fell short of having a good night.
Let’s Talk About Michelle Sussett:
Michelle Sussett is one of the contestants that I generally wonder why the judges let her in the show to begin with. Week after week, she had the worst performances on the entire show. But this last week with “Remember Me” from Coco, Michelle really showcased massive star quality.
Prior to Disney week, Michelle had showcased a true entertainment value as a performer, but just never hit the notes and seemed uncomfortable with the singing part of the gig. This week, she finally connected with a song and felt like a star. In all honesty, I can’t believe that she didn’t make it to the top 7.
Is Maddie Poppe Your Next American Idol?
Maddie took on “The Bare Nesseceties” from The Jungle Book and I cannot stop thinking that her performance was the winning performance for her. I don’t see her going home. She seemed so comfortable and seemed like she was having fun.
Do you think Maddie might be the next Idol?
Here’s to hoping American Idol chooses better themes.
