3 Things The Voice Needs to do to Continue Dominating the Reality Competition Genre

#2 – Cut the show down an hour a week.

There is no need for The Voice to take up 4 hours a week. Monday’s show should continue to be 2 hours, but the Tuesday result show should be condensed into one hour. You don’t need to have gimmicks and guest performers every single week, it reduces the effect that “special guest performances” have on a show. If they limit the guest performances that would actually keep them special and help drive ratings up for the Tuesday show. It also makes the two-hour finale a unique event that cannot be missed instead of just a slightly bigger result show.

4 hours a week is a huge commitment, even 3 hours is still a lot, but I think the show should continue to be on two days. At one point Idol had 4 hours of programming a week, sometimes up to 7 hours with their Idol Gives Back special. That led to the show producing meaningless segments that turned off viewers who would just tune back in during the last 10 minutes to find out who was safe and who was eliminated. Ultimately, Idol went down to 2 hours a week during the live shows and would eliminate a contestant in the first few minutes of the show. With today’s age of digital viewing habits, less is more when it comes to live TV. If The Voice doesn’t catch up with how their audience likes to watch TV they will begin to tune out in massive numbers.
