-IN THE WAKE OF SECRET WARS…
Over the last few days, Marvel has peeled back the curtain on their universe-smashing summer event Secret Wars, and it turns out it’s exactly what it seemed: the incursion events that New Avengers has been dealing with come to a head when the overlapping Earth in question is from the Ultimate Universe, something something buy the first issue, everything ever in Marvel Comics becomes one universe. It might well be a total mess, but Jonathan Hickman is an ace at navigating overcomplex messes so the story itself could still be something worth reading. But there’s still that aftermath.
I know the Ultimate Universe has been on life support for years now, as they try to keep things interesting in the Ultimates by finding new ways to blow up the world and change everything forever in their “all things are possible!” sandbox, but the one thing that I will really, truly miss is the importance of Miles Morales being the one true Spider-Man. I would be insanely shocked if Miles doesn’t make his way into the main Marvel U as the most important change to come from this event, but here he’s just going to be another off-brand Spider-Hero and never get to rise any higher than second fiddle to Peter Parker. Losing a world where the hero of the people is a young kid of color makes me feel like maybe we’re blowing up the wrong Earth.
Also Evil Reed Richards is pretty amazing, but we’ll probably keep him too. Put him in a tag team with our Dr. Doom and give them a base on the moon. Evil Marvel Team-Up #1 will sell a million copies.
