-I COULD NOT WITHSTAND THE METAL
Scott Snyder is one of my ten favorite comic writers of the past ten years, no question. So while I am very worn out on company-wide, high-stakes crossover events, and especially uninterested with the goings-on of the Justice League for the past few years, I decided to dip my toes into Dark Nights: Metal. Like many of the books I criticize in these writeups, it’s not that it was bad. It just didn’t hook me and I needed for it to do so.
Much of what I’ve seen of Metal seemed to be in line with Snyder’s All Star Batman: a high-octane dumb ride with solid dilemmas and thrilling action. I figured I could do with a popcorn version of the DCU, and that’s what I got…in the first half of this issue. The second half was dangerously expository and weighed the affair down quite a bit.
So where do I fall after reading this? I’m in the same spot I was in after an issue or two of Rebirth and Secret Empire. I’m curious to see what happens, but don’t feel the need to go along for the ride.
